History

Rhythms of the Reef Chorus Inc. is a group of women which sings in part-harmony. It has developed from a simple quartet in 2001, of friends, ‘who loved to sing’, to a group which ‘loves to sing and entertain an audience’ and averages 40 active members.

As the numbers expanded over the years, the rehearsal venue moved from a private home to a variety of venues in the Bundaberg area. Currently, rehearsals are held at St Luke’s Anglican School in East Bundaberg.
In 2003, the chorus adopted the name Hinkler Harmony Chorus and applied to become a Chartered Member of the World-wide Organisation of Women singers, based in the USA, called Sweet Adelines International.
After a successful Evaluation in the Brisbane Convention Centre in 2006, the Chorus was granted full membership, and were eligible to compete in the Annual Convention, held across Australia, by the Australian Region of the organisation.

Between 2007and 2018, the Chorus attended Conventions in Brisbane, Canberra, and three times at Wrest Point Casino, Hobart.

To maintain a high performance standard in the intervening years, the Chorus entered the Maryborough Eisteddfod, in the Open Section, on three occasions, taking out three first places. In 2024 and 2025, we participated in the non-competitive Showcase Section of the Bundaberg Eisteddfod.
In June 2010 the Chorus became Incorporated and changed its name to Rhythms of the Reef Chorus Inc. In 2016 we were awarded a Certificate of 10 Years Service by Sweet Adelines International for spreading the art and love of a’capella singing.

After resigning from Sweet Adelines in 2019, Rhythms decided to become a Community Chorus in 2020. The Chorus showcases their Australian Package at Citizenship Ceremonies held by the Bundaberg Regional Council. We sing at Care facilities, Retirement Villages, for community organisations and in support of local charities. The Chorus presents an Annual Concert to highlight the repertoire we have been working on throughout the year.
In 2024 Rhythms received a nomination for an Australia Day Award in the category of Contribution to the Community .
In 2026 our members celebrate the milestone of 25 years of singing and 20 years since formally becoming a performing Chorus. Our motto is ‘Join the Chorus, Join the Fun!’
